My Daughter’s Return

A daughter who left at nineteen returns at thirty-seven to find her mother has spent eighteen years telling the entire neighbourhood she is dead – and has a reason that is worse than any lie.

Wei Ran left home at nineteen after a fight she still cannot fully describe. At thirty-seven she returns to a compound where every neighbour believes she died of an illness in her twenties – a story her mother told, consistently, for eighteen years, to everyone including the local authorities. The lie turns out to be the legal mechanism that kept her brother out of prison.
